Background of the Study

Kinship networks have traditionally played a critical role in facilitating business ventures and entrepreneurial activities in Agbor. These networks provide not only financial support but also social capital, mentorship, and access to vital resources (Uche, 2023). In a context where formal financial institutions may be inaccessible, kinship ties offer a reliable alternative for raising capital, sharing expertise, and reducing business risks (Ike, 2024). The trust and reciprocity inherent in these networks often lead to more resilient and adaptable entrepreneurial ventures. However, rapid modernization and changing socio-economic structures have raised questions about the evolving role of kinship networks in contemporary business practices (Ekwueme, 2025). This study examines how kinship networks contribute to entrepreneurial success in Agbor, exploring the dynamics of trust, obligation, and mutual support within these social structures. It also considers the impact of external factors such as technological advances and market competition on the traditional support systems.

Statement of the Problem

Despite their historical importance, the role of kinship networks in entrepreneurial success in Agbor is increasingly challenged by modern economic forces. Entrepreneurs relying on these networks face limitations such as restricted capital access and potential nepotism, which can hinder scalability and innovation (Uche, 2023). Additionally, changes in societal norms and economic policies have altered the dynamics of these networks, raising concerns about their effectiveness in the modern business environment (Ike, 2024). This study seeks to identify these challenges and assess how kinship networks continue to influence entrepreneurial outcomes (Ekwueme, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the contribution of kinship networks to entrepreneurial success in Agbor.

To identify challenges faced by entrepreneurs reliant on kinship ties.

To recommend strategies for leveraging kinship networks more effectively.

Research Questions:

How do kinship networks facilitate entrepreneurial activities in Agbor?

What challenges limit the effectiveness of these networks in contemporary business?

How can kinship networks be optimized to support sustainable entrepreneurial growth?

Research Hypotheses:

H₁: Kinship networks have a significant positive influence on entrepreneurial success.

H₂: Modern economic challenges reduce the effectiveness of traditional kinship support.

H₃: Strategic improvements in network management can enhance entrepreneurial outcomes.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the enduring role of kinship networks in entrepreneurial success in Agbor. The insights gained will help policymakers, business mentors, and community organizations develop strategies to bolster entrepreneurial ventures while preserving valuable social ties. It offers a nuanced perspective on the interplay between tradition and modernity in economic development (Uche, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to the role of kinship networks in entrepreneurial success in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, focusing on local business dynamics without addressing broader national trends.

Definitions of Terms:

Kinship Networks: Social systems based on familial or close relational ties that provide support.
